WW2 Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) 59th Infantry Division – 21st Army Group Battle Dress. This is a 1940 pattern battle dress with printed RAMC shoulder titles, embroidered 21st Army Group formation sign, maroon felt arm of service strip and embroidered 59th Infantry division formation sign. Lower right sleeve having rarely seen trade bars for RAMC Tradesman Class 1 and service chevrons. With on the left lower sleeve good conduct chevrons. 1939-45 star and France & Germany star medal ribbons above the breast pocket. Interior with original non-dated tailors label, ink stamped with WD and M which is indicating the date 1944. Good used condition, shows wear and shows some moth damage.

The 59th Infantry Division’s final combat was a protracted battle to capture the town of Thury-Harcourt. Historians have praised the effort of the division in these battles, during which it suffered several thousand casualties. By August 1944, the British Army was badly short of manpower. As the division was the most recently established formation serving within the Second Army in France, and not as a result of its performance, it was chosen to be disbanded and its men transferred to other units to bring them up to strength. The division was broken up on 26 August, and officially disbanded on 19 October 1944. This RAMC Private kept wearing his former 59th div patch on his battle dress while he was transferred to the 21st Army Group, something what was not uncommon in the British army.
